White Musk: Everything You Should Know

Indice

What is white musk and how is it obtained?

White musk is a synthetic product widely used by the perfumery industry. Specifically, it is a class of synthetic flavorings that reproduce a soft and sweet fragrance easily associated with a "clean scent." Contrary to popular belief, white musk does not emulate the earthy, animalic, and woody scent of musk deer or botanical mosses. Let's discover what lies behind this widespread and far from natural fragrance.

    Botanical white musk

Botanical white musk is an invention: this botanical species does not actually exist. However, it is truly surprising that the essence, linked to a non-existent plant, has spread so widely as to become a clear reference in the collective imagination. White musk detergents and cosmetics abound on store shelves. Many brands that offer entire white musk lines boast about the complete naturalness of the product, even though the fragrance used is, by necessity, pure chemistry.

Olfattiva exclusively uses raw materials of plant origin, completely natural and whole, which is why you will never find White Musk among our offerings.

    Properties of white musk

Synthetic musks are divided into three classes: nitro aromatic musks, polycyclic musk compounds, and macrocyclic musk compounds. The first two types are the most used in the production of cosmetics and detergents. Numerous studies and research have shown that these types of compounds, in addition to not dispersing into the environment, can accumulate in the body and weaken the immune system, inhibiting the expulsion of other toxic chemical substances.

The great public debate arising from these discoveries has led to strong limitations on the use of these substances, which should be replaced with macrocyclic musk compounds, considered safer. Carcinogenic properties have been detected within nitro aromatic musks and polycyclic compounds, leading to their ban in several regions of the world.

    White musk from deer

As already mentioned, white musk is a synthetic composition and has no natural origin of any kind, neither plant nor animal. Animal musk is that secreted by the musk deer. The musk deer, typical of the Hindu Kush and Himalayan regions, secretes a substance contained within two sacs located under its belly, which are spread to mark territory during mating season. These substances are a true olfactory identity card: from their scent, female specimens can receive information regarding the male's age, genetic heritage, and state of health. In the vast majority of cases, these fragrances are reproduced synthetically to reduce the exorbitant cost of the animal raw material.

Olfattiva rejects any raw material of animal origin and any kind of testing that is not on humans.

    White musk essential oil

White musk essential oil does not exist, as the white musk plant itself does not exist. Essential oil is a complex mixture of odorous molecules produced by plants, concentrated volatile aromatic substances. It is the soul of the plant, reflecting its subtle energy and all its virtuous properties: it is therefore a completely natural plant substance that has little to do with the synthetic reproductions used in conventional perfumery.

If you want to try a true botanical musk, we recommend Oakmoss absolute: its deep, earthy, and persistent scent is also used in Botanical Perfumery compositions as a fixative, as it helps to stabilize more volatile molecules.

    White musk perfume for men

If you still desire a white musk-based perfume for men (or women), you will certainly have no trouble finding one on the market. If, on the other hand, you would like to experience a truly natural perfume, based on essential oils, you can choose plants like Vetiver and Patchouli, which vaguely evoke the forest, the dark and deep notes of musks, and are well suited for a masculine perfume. A valid feminine alternative can be Bourbon Vanilla: the scent of true Vanilla essential oil is not sweet or cloying at all, it has the spicy and earthy notes characteristic of the pod.

    A fragrant greeting,
