Essential Oils distilled from Woods and Roots
Sort by:
The rooting depth of woods
Essential Oils distilled from Woods encapsulate the deepest and most rooted part of the plant world. Atlas Cedar, Sandalwood, Cinnamon: these are warm, dry, and enveloping essential oils, capable of promoting grounding, stability, and a return to one's center. In aromatherapy, they are precious companions for moments of concentration, meditation, and introspection.
Olfattiva essential oils are pure, unadulterated, and 100% natural. They come from a careful and rigorous selection, matured over twenty years of experience, and tell the story of the plant's origin, the producer's work, the extraction method, and the seasonality of the harvest. For woods, quality also depends on the plant's age and origin.
How they are made: steam distillation
Essential oils from woods are obtained through steam distillation, the most traditional extraction technique. The woody part of the plant is placed in an alembic, where steam passes through it, extracting aromatic molecules; the steam then passes through a refrigerated coil and returns to a liquid state, separating from the aromatic water in the Florentine flask.
It is a slow process, suitable for rich and dense raw materials like woods and roots, which release heavy and persistent molecules to the steam. This is why essential oils distilled from woods often have a deep note and a naturally longer persistence compared to other families.
Essential oil is the soul of the plant
Essential oil is a complex mixture of odorous molecules, and from a subtle perspective, it is the soul of the plant: sun, water, air, earth, and subtle energies become wood and, through the essential oil, interact with humans.
In woods, this soul expresses itself with depth and warmth.
It is a richness that cannot be synthetically recreated: an artificial reproduction would never have the properties or the energetic information of the plant.
How we select them and our focus on ethical supply chains
The selection of essential oils from woods requires great expertise, because quality depends on the origin, the age of the plant, and the distillation method. For each raw material, we verify the botanical name, chemotype, part used, origin, and quality of distillation, always complementing this with an olfactory evaluation.
For some woods, ethical sourcing is an integral part of quality. Our Palo Santo, for example, comes from naturally fallen trees in Ecuador, harvested as part of a certified supply chain project supporting local communities and reforestation: a choice that respects the environment, people, and the rhythms of Nature.
Only living materials, capable of telling stories and evoking emotions, enter the Olfattiva catalog: a carefully selected, traceable, and recognizable raw material, often also ethically harvested.
The properties of essential oils from woods
Essential oils distilled from woods are traditionally associated with grounding, stability, and a return to one's center. Sandalwood has a calming and relaxing action, and releases emotions held in the chest; Atlas Cedar accompanies those seeking solidity and courage.
These essential oils speak to those seeking depth and introspection, ideal for moments of meditation and concentration. For crystal therapy, some woods are suggested pairings: Atlas Cedar, for example, accompanies Tiger's Eye, for those who need to overcome difficult moments with courage and trust.
They support grounding during yoga and meditation practices, accompanying the return to the center and introspection. They are a precious anchor in everyday life.
How to use them
Essential oils from woods are suitable for room diffusion, where they create warm and grounding atmospheres: use up to 15 drops in water-based diffusers like Levante and Maestrale, 5-7 in cold diffusers like Alarino. They are ideal for spaces dedicated to work, study, and meditation.
In general, we advise against applying pure essential oils directly to the skin: for topical use, they should be diluted in a vegetable oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba, or in a neutral cream. When diluted, woods are perfect for grounding and enveloping massages.
These oils are also protagonists of some dedicated lines, such as Karma Tarma, where Atlas Cedar helps protect wardrobes and fabrics from moths with a 100% natural repellent action, while also pleasantly scenting the environment.
How to store them
To best preserve the quality of essential oils from woods, we recommend storing them away from direct light, heat, and temperature fluctuations. They are living and precious raw materials: proper storage helps maintain their aromatic profile and properties intact.
These essential oils, steam distilled and rich in heavy molecules, are among the most stable over time.
Natural, vegan, and cruelty-free
All Olfattiva essential oils are 100% natural, pure, and unadulterated. They are vegan and cruelty-free, formulated with only plant-based raw materials, without animal derivatives. Olfattiva is certified AIAB Bio Eco Cosmesi and Vegan OK.
For woods, attention also extends to the supply chain: we choose traceable and ethically harvested raw materials. This is Olfattiva's way of understanding quality: profound, authentic, and respectful of Nature and its inhabitants.
What 100% natural means
In the world of essential oils, some words can be ambiguous. They are often used to indicate fragrances that have little or nothing natural about them: synthetic blends, reconstructed in the laboratory, sometimes presented as being close to the plant world. Olfattiva chose a different path from 2006, because our work arises from a faithful listening to the plant.
Our essential oils are pure and complete: they are not reconstituted, not diluted with synthetic substances, and do not contain chemical fixatives. Each oil retains the plant's original complexity, its aromatic part but also its more subtle force, that living quality that acts on personal well-being and the atmosphere of spaces. For woods, this means preserving the plant's warm depth.
Olfattiva was born from a need for purity and a gamble: a truly natural scent is possible. We have been saying it since 2006 and continue to believe it, choosing every day to fully preserve the properties of plants.
The Workshop: where matter takes shape
The Olfattiva Workshop is located in Massa Lombarda, in the province of Ravenna, in the heart of Romagna. It is here that every essential oil is welcomed, evaluated, and cared for, and it is here that raw materials become perfumes, synergies, and aromatherapy products, through attentive and conscious actions.
Packaging is done entirely by hand: a choice that not only concerns the doing but also the way the product is accompanied to its final form. While working, we try to maintain beautiful, clean, and luminous thoughts, because we believe that every gesture leaves a trace and every intention accompanies the matter. For woods, attention often extends to the ethical supply chain, as in the case of Palo Santo from Ecuador.
It is this combination of rigor, expertise, and artisanal care that makes every Olfattiva essential oil an authentic and recognizable raw material, the result of over twenty years of experience at the service of Nature. When you use an essential oil from woods, you are experiencing the living identity of a plant.
Woods for meditation and home care
Essential oils from woods beautifully accompany moments of meditation and introspection, supporting grounding and a return to the center. In yoga practices, these notes create a focused and stable atmosphere, ideal for inner work.
They are also protagonists of lines dedicated to home care: Atlas Cedar, for example, is at the heart of the Karma Tarma line, which protects wardrobes and fabrics from moths with a 100% natural repellent action, while also pleasantly scenting the environment. It is an example of how the strength of woods combines aromatherapy and functionality.
For environments, following olfactory architecture, wood notes are best used in spaces dedicated to contemplation, reading, and rest, where their enveloping nature promotes calm and stability.
Pairings and synergies with woods
Woods are the ideal base for more structured compositions, where they form the background and prolong more volatile notes. They pair well with citrus fruits for fresh and deep scents, with sweet notes for warm and enveloping compositions, and with resins for meditative atmospheres.
For those who love to experiment, we suggest starting with woods as a base note, building heart and top notes around them. Diluted in a carrier oil, they are perfect for grounding massages; diffused, they create warm and enveloping atmospheres, ideal for moments of peace.
Safe use and practical advice
Essential oils are extremely concentrated raw materials: a few drops contain a large quantity of plant material. Therefore, they should be used with respect and caution. The most important rule is never to apply them pure to the skin: for topical use, they should always be diluted in a vegetable oil, such as sweet almond or jojoba, or in a neutral cream, to make them gentler and safer.
When an essential oil is added to a cream or a vegetable oil, a true aromatherapeutic product is obtained: during massage, the active ingredients work locally, while the odorous molecules reach the limbic system through the sense of smell, promoting balance and emotional well-being. This is what we call transdermal aromatherapy.
In the presence of animals, essential oils can be diffused with care and common sense: our pets have a much more developed sense of smell than ours. It is better to choose delicate notes, use them sparingly, allow the animal to move away, and ventilate the rooms well. In case of doubt, it is always advisable to consult a veterinarian.
Essential oil, an ancient and precious ally
Essential oils have accompanied humans for millennia. Steam distillation, used to obtain essential oils from woods, is a slow process, suitable for rich and dense raw materials like woods and roots, which release heavy and persistent molecules to the steam.
Woods have always been associated with grounding, protection, and the sacred dimension. Sandalwood and Cedar have permeated the history of many cultures as precious raw materials for meditation and rituals. Today, Olfattiva preserves their quality with a rigorous selection, often also attentive to the ethical supply chain.
Offering an essential oil from woods means providing an ally of depth and stability: a companion for meditation, for home care, and for more structured compositions, to be experienced as an anchor in daily life.
Why choose Olfattiva essential oils
Choosing an Olfattiva woody essential oil means choosing a living, pure, and traceable raw material, the result of a selection that begins long before the laboratory and of artisanal processing that preserves its integrity. Not just a simple product, but the soul of a plant, brought into daily life with respect.
The depth of woods, preserved with slow distillation and often an ethical supply chain, is a gift of grounding and stability: a precious anchor for meditation and for more structured compositions.
When you use it, you hold in your hands an essential oil that is carefully chosen, recognizable, and authentic: every drop carries with it the origin of the plant, the work of the producer, the extraction method, and the seasonality of the harvest.
This is what makes Olfattiva essential oils different: not an imitation of a fragrance, but the living message of Nature, preserved without compromise and with full respect for every living being.
Sun, wind, water, and subtle energies become a plant.
Essential oil is the Soul of the plant that interacts with Man.
Frequently Asked Questions
