The plant to be distilled is placed inside an alembic, where steam is introduced; as it passes through the plant, it extracts the essential oil molecules. The steam then passes through a refrigerated coil, where it returns to a liquid state.

The resulting liquid flows into a Florentine vase, where the essential oil separates from the aromatic water: the essential oil, being lighter than water, floats to the surface. Although obtained from a berry, Litsea contains a lot of citral: this is why its application before sun exposure is not recommended.
